Congress of Critical Social Psychology: Discourse, Materiality and Politics. February 6th to 8th, 2013. Barcelona, Spain.
The Small Group Meeting held in Barcelona in 1993(1) lead, four years after, to the book Critical Social Psychology, a publication that reflects the excitement of the 90s in the consolidation of a paradigm shift under the umbrella of social constructionism, with discourse as the backbone of research practice and a strong commitment towards political action. Two decades later, we are facing a serious crisis of political legitimacy, social cohesion and environmental sustainability, a context in which the academy is progressively co-opted by a neoliberal model that uses the knowledge produced by social sciences for efficient population management . In a context of political and social upheaval, our postmodern hangover draws a dispersed post-constructionist landscape where the centrality of discourse gives place to the the development of approaches that take into account the psychic, emotional and material elements that constitute our social fabric.
Critical social psychology brings together different ontologies and epidemiologies without a defined umbrella working as a set of tools that help in the identification, analysis and transformation of our existing power relations. This meeting opens a space for debate and reflection of different theoretical sensibilities and thematic analysis in a critical approach to social reality. A space that welcomes specific investigations, theoretical analysis and political positions within a critical reflection on the current forms of social constitution and reproduction.
